As Christmas day passes and everyone begins to settle into getting back to “normal” routines again after the holiday season, we often forget that there is another special celebration. Epiphany is the celebration of Christ being announce to the world.
An epiphany is a revelation or realization; however, we do not have a revelation or realization without something leading us to that realization. The wise men, who were from the East without a belief in God would not have found Jesus on their own. God placed a star in the sky that would led the wise men to Jesus, to their revelation.
The wise men most likely knew about the old testament prophesies and would go seeking the new born king. They, like many, thought the Jesus would be a physical king and they went looking for him in Jerusalem. They would not have found Jesus and had the epiphany that He is our heavenly king without God showing them the way.
We are like the wise men. We have worldly knowledge, live day to day among people with different and various beliefs. Without God, we do not know how or where to find our light and our salvation. God has place a star in our lives to led us to our epiphany!
Christmas isn’t just one day a year. It takes place every day! As Christians, disciples of Christ, we celebrate His coming to earth on Christmas day; but we continue to celebrate His purpose for each and every one of us on Epiphany which is January 6, and we celebrate His gift of salvation on Easter.
God’s epiphany for us does not only happen on these dates but is for us every day! Celebrate every day!
Epiphany, Christ is the Lord for all nations, celebrated around the world today:
Spain: gifts do not arrive on Christmas day but on Three Kings Day Jan. 6. Children write letters
to the wise men rather than to Santa
Italy: La Befana, a soot-covered lady who missed her chance to go with the wise men to find
Jesus, goes from house to house with gifts looking for Him.
Germany: people dress up as kings and go from house to house singing carols.
Mexico: celebrated with the eating of the Rosca de rayes cake which represents the kings
crown and has a baby Jesus in it. The person who finds the baby in their slice makes tamales for everyone.
